Charge Into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home

Fire Prevention Week (FPW) is Oct. 5-11. This year’s theme is the safe use of lithium-ion batteries.

While efficient, these batteries can cause dangerous fires if damaged or misused—burning up to 5,000 F, releasing toxic gases, and even reigniting later. Fires involving e-bikes and scooters are on the rise.

Safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA):

• Buy batteries/devices from reputable sources.

• Use only the manufacturer’s charger.

• Avoid overnight charging or charging near flammable materials.

• Stop using swollen, hot, or odd-smelling batteries.

• Recycle batteries properly—never toss them in the trash.

General fire safety:

• Install smoke alarms on every level.

• Keep a fire extinguisher handy.

• Practice a home escape plan.
