August Photo Contest Winners

Bruce Hartsell

Jim Burkstrand won first place in the August Photography Club contest with A Morning Shadow. The contest theme was Light and Shadow. Jim captured the image on the Proctor Trail in Madera Canyon while walking in the early morning looking for pollinators. He said, “I came across this red paper wasp who had landed on a granite rock. It was lined up quite well, with the low sun directly behind him casting his shadow to the front. I loved the lighting and its shadow. I was lucky, as in a few seconds, he was moving around and soon flew off to some nearby flowers.” Canon 90D, 16-300 mm Tamron lens at 277mm, f/6.3, 1/2000 sec, ISO 200. The photo was post-processed in Lightroom.

John Tubbs won second place with Shadow and Lamp. John said, “I had walked by this building at several times of day and noticed the shadows from a shade structure overhead. The shadows vary depending on the time of day. I made several trips back to shoot different versions of the image, and on my last visit, I saw that the table and lamp had been moved close to the window. This provided a good focal point to anchor the abstract shadows.” Leica Q3, 43 mm, f/8, 1/2500 sec, ISO 800.

Steve Piepmeier won third place with Learning from Mom. Steve said the early morning sunrise caught these juvenile owls and their mother who was preparing to pass off some food. He said, “We learn from observation, and it was exciting following the action. The shadow and light of the scene changed as their action moved immediately.” Apple iPhone 16 Pro, 15.66 mm, f/2.8, 1/250 sec, ISO 50.

The Photography Club meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month in the Kino Center. Information about the Photography Club and its events is available at www.pcqc.org.
