Denny Huber won first place in the Photography Club’s July contest on the theme of celebration. He captured the image, Grad Day on the Jumbotron, at his grandson’s graduation from Michigan State in May. Denny said, “From our nosebleed seats, he was hard to pick out in the sea of green. But the Jumbotron cycled through random shots of the graduates, and when Will came up, I got off several shots with my point-and-shoot camera. This shot was the best one because he doesn’t smile as much as he should! He was smiling that day.” Panasonic DC-ZS80, 22.3 mm, f/6.3, 1/80 sec, ISO 640.
Jan Hartsell won second place with Celebrating New Grandson, a photo captured at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital at the birth of her second grandchild, born nearly 19 years after the first. Jan said, “Our son, Ethan; his newborn son Hanzo; and Ethan’s big sister, Merideth, were the perfect capture for me on the day when Hanzo was born. My Google phone caught the joy we all felt as we celebrated the birth!” Google Pixel 2XL, 4.5 mm, f/1.8, 1/60 sec, ISO 181.
Janice Mounce won third place with Untitled, taken in Quail Creek on the Fourth of July and inspired by the 250th birthday of our country. Janice noted that it is “young in comparison to the rest of the world but an important one just the same.” She said the challenge for capturing the image was the timing and lighting. The Photography Club of Quail Creek holds a monthly photo contest surrounding an announced theme, and independent judges select the winner. Additional information is available at pcqc.org. Membership in the club is open to all Quail Creek residents.
