The Quail Creek dog park (both the passive and active side) will be closed for overseeding starting Thursday, Oct. 1. This process involves lowering the height of the mower, reseeding and watering the new lawn until maturity. Once completed, the dog park users will enjoy a green, winter lawn. Residents will be notified when the dog park reopens which is always after the first cut of the new lawn. The length of the closure does depend on weather conditions—the winter rye thrives in cooler temperatures and stalls when our days get warmer unexpectedly.
A week prior to the dog park closure, the common area turf will be overseeded with no foot (or paw) traffic allowed. This includes the medians, the lawn near the Canyon Club, the 1st 4-way stop, the lawn at the Quail Creek monument, the lawn in 35b and the lawn surrounding the clubhouse. Please, no walking on the lawn or pets allowed during the overseeding. Additional information will be provided as time draws closer to the projected re-opening date of the dog park, so please monitor your emails for updates in What’s Happening. Without overseeding, the lawn and turf would go dormant over the winter months. The process of overseeding with rye grass is so we can all enjoy a green lawn over the winter months. The winter rye is cold-tolerant and helps fill in bare spots, reducing weed growth and maintaining a green appearance during the cooler months. Bermuda grass naturally reactivates in spring with warmer temperatures and adequate water, so there’s no need to replant.
By late spring, the winter rye will naturally die back, and begin a transition to the Bermuda grass which was dormant over the winter. This occurs as the temperatures warm up. Temperature fluctuations can cause temporary overlap between dormant winter rye and active Bermuda, which is normal.
