On The Go Goes to Karchner Caverns

Carol Michels

The Women of Quail Creek (TWOQC) small group, On the Go, toured Kartchner Caverns on Jan. 22.

The On the Go group has been active in TWOQC for over 10 years. Our mission is to take a group of 10 ladies on adventures around the Tucson and Tubac area. We try to keep the adventure within a one-hour drive from our base here at Quail Creek.

We were so excited to add a Kartchner Caverns tour to our schedule, because it is a true gem of the Southwest! Our tour guide was a delight! She and her husband are Kartchner State Park Camp hosts, and they regularly volunteer their time at the Caverns.

One of the reasons the Caverns have remained so pristine is that they follow strict protocols regarding tours. We were misted off as we entered the Rotunda/Throne Room to keep dust and cells from falling off. The caves are alive and still growing because of these rules. We enjoyed the magnificent views inside this living cave and walking along as well.

To cap off the day, we had a wonderful lunch in Benson at the Farmhouse Restaurant, a local restaurant with unique, small-town charm.

February’s On the Go theme was Rodeos and Cowboys, so our adventure tours included the Rodeo Museum and Harker’s Western Museum and Movie Set.
