Meet Tucson Historian Mauro A. Trejo, IV

Joyce Shumate

The Let’s Travel Club is excited to host Mauro A. Trejo, IV, as its presenter on March 20. A seventh-generation Tucsonan, Mauro Trejo is a renowned public historian whose family roots in the area date back to 1780. He is the founder of Trejo’s Walking Tours: The Real History of Tucson, through which he guides private and group historical tours. Mauro also provides expert consultation and generous partnership to various organizations across the region.

Join us as we explore the dramatic, irreversible transformation of Tucson following the Southern Pacific Railroad’s triumphant arrival on a pivotal day: March 20, 1880. Discover how one single event—the arrival of the iron horse—catalyzed Tucson’s leap from an isolated frontier town to a modern American city.

Celebrating the 146th anniversary of this pivotal moment, the presentation, “From Trails to Rails,” will reveal how the railroad’s arrival permanently altered Tucson’s architecture, demographics, infrastructure, language, and agriculture. Discover why Tucson was forever changed.

The driving of the “golden spike” that connected Tucson to the transcontinental rail network did more than just connect two pieces of track; it instantaneously connected the city to the modern world. This event unleashed an economic and cultural explosion, fundamentally reshaping the city’s landscape, demography, and future trajectory.

Linn Myrick is organizing a guided tour with Mauro, “Murals of Tucson.” Space is limited, and sign-up for this tour will be after Mr. Trejo’s presentation.

A free-will offering will be collected to help offset the presenter’s fee. Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Join the Let’s Travel Club on Friday, March 20, at 2 p.m. in the Ocotillo and Mesquite Rooms at the Kino Center to meet guest speaker Mauro Trejo.

This event is open to all QC residents and their guests. We hope to see you there!
