Fall Prevention

Falls can happen to anyone, but adults 65+ are at higher risk—one in four will fall each year, and one fall doubles the chance of another.

Why it matters:

• Leading cause of injury and injury-related death

• Three million ER visits yearly for fall injuries

• Over 95% of hip fractures caused by falls

• Most common cause of traumatic brain injuries

Risk factors (CDC):

• Weakness, balance issues, vitamin D deficiency

• Certain medications

• Vision/hearing problems

• Poor footwear, foot pain

• Home hazards (clutter, rugs, uneven steps)

Prevention tips:

• Talk with your healthcare provider about falls and medications

• Get vision/hearing checked; use glasses/hearing aids

• Exercise to build strength and balance

• Install grab bars in bathrooms, use non-slip rugs, clear walkways

• Improve lighting indoors/outdoors, watch for uneven ground
