University of Arizona College Democrats Come to Quail Creek
The Ocotillo and Mesquite Rooms at the Kino Center were filled with residents who came to hear from the next generation of Democrats. The meeting was held on Sept. 13 at 3 p.m.
The University of Arizona College Democrats included students Rahel Hehn, David Gamez, and Tre Rodes. Also with them was Carter Weeks of the Young Democrats of Arizona.
After introducing themselves, it became a question-and-answer session. The issues they care about are cost of living, affordability of housing, employment, and water sustainability, to name a few.
The UA College Democrats provide information to students, have voter registration drives on campus, and collaborate with Pima County Democrats.
These Generation Z students are articulate and hopeful. Their focus is youth leadership, policy innovation, and community empowerment. They want their voices to be heard.
Michael Brescia Returns to Quail Creek
At the Democratic Club of Quail Creek (DCQC) meeting on Sept. 20 at 3 p.m., Dr. Michael Brescia, curator of Ethnohistory at the Arizona State Museum, returned to give another presentation before the DCQC.
The attendees received a lesson in how history and law intersect between Spain, Mexico, and the U.S. when it comes to property rights and water rights in the American West and the Borderlands.
The differences between Civil Law, Common Law, and International Law were described. When water is scarce, it becomes a source of conflict and dispute.
Brescia explained whose jurisdiction and which laws have been applied in the past and present to resolve this issue for certain groups. Water rights of indigenous people is an ongoing issue today.
Attributed to Mark Twain, “Whiskey Is for Drinking; Water Is for Fighting Over,” was the title of Brescia’s presentation.
