Safety in Arizona
Hiking during Arizona’s monsoon season presents unique risks, like sudden storms, lightning, and flash floods. To stay safe:
- Check Weather Forecasts before hiking, as storms can develop rapidly.
- Avoid Canyons and Low Areas that are prone to flash flooding, even if it’s not raining locally.
- Stay Alert for changing weather and the sound of thunder, which signals nearby lightning.
- Seek Higher Ground if caught in a storm, but avoid crossing flooded areas.
- Avoid High Elevations due to increased lightning risk; stick to lower trails.
- Turn Around, Don’t Drown; never try to cross flooded paths or roads.
Following these precautions can help ensure a safer hiking experience during monsoon season.
