Deck the Halls with Fire Safety

The holiday season brings joy and celebration but also increases fire risks due to kitchen accidents, dry Christmas trees, candles, and faulty decorations. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) provides safety tips to minimize these risks:

Fire Safety Tips

1. Candles:

• Keep candles at least 12 inches away from flammable items.

• Use flameless, battery-operated candles to reduce fire hazards.

• Christmas Day sees the highest candle fire incidents.

2. Holiday Lights:

Inspect and discard damaged light strands.

• Follow manufacturer guidelines for connecting strands.

• Turn off lights when leaving home or going to bed.

3. Christmas Trees:

Choose a fresh tree and keep it watered daily to avoid dryness.

• Place the tree away from heat sources and ensure it doesn’t block exits.

• Dispose of the tree when dry to prevent fires.

4. Decorations:

Use lights rated for indoor/outdoor use as appropriate.

• Secure decorations to withstand wind and prevent accidents.

• Avoid using electric lights on metallic trees.

• Keep breakable ornaments and hazardous items away from children and pets.

5. Fireplace Safety:

Keep flammable decorations and gifts three feet from fireplaces.

• Use a fire screen and ensure fires are completely out before leaving or sleeping.

• Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, keep a fire extinguisher nearby, and have chimneys professionally cleaned annually.

Christmas Tree Selection and Care

• Test tree health by pulling and shaking branches—excessive needle loss indicates poor condition.

• Cut two inches from the trunk to ensure better water absorption.

• Use a sturdy, water-holding stand and refill water regularly.

Additional Advice

• Secure trees with fishing line to prevent tipping over, especially in households with children or pets.

• Always prioritize safety to keep holiday celebrations joyous and accident-free.

By following these precautions, families can enjoy a safe and memorable holiday season.
