September Is National Preparedness Month

Peggy McGee

Every year, FEMA announces that September is National Preparedness Month. The idea behind this special month is to make people aware of steps they should take or things they should at least be aware of before a disaster strikes.

To promote National Preparedness Month, the Greater Green Valley Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will be hosting a Preparedness Fair on Saturday, Sept. 21. The event will be held at the West Center located at 1111 S. GVR Drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is no charge to attend the Fair, but CERT hopes that attendees will bring a non-perishable food item if possible. All food donations will be shared between the Green Valley and Sahuarita Food Banks.

The Fair will feature information on a variety of preparedness topics for adults, including stocking one’s pantry, financial preparedness, and even pet care in the event of an extended power outage. Kids will enjoy seeing the fire truck and other equipment provided by Southwest Gas and TEP. Children will be able to take home an activity book, too. Displays include communications equipment from the Pima County Office of Emergency Management, Border Patrol with their dogs, National Weather Service, Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, The Animal League of Green Valley, and many more. Valley Assistance Services will provide free blood pressure screenings. A Dispose-A-Med box will be available for attendees to drop off expired prescription and over-the-counter medications.

There will be a food truck on site, door prizes, and a raffle.

Please consider joining CERT on Sept. 21 for a fun-filled, informative morning.
