October and November were active months for The Women of Quail Creek (TWOQC)!
The annual Membership Appreciation Luncheon was held on Monday, Oct. 25. Many attendees immersed themselves in the “Roaring ‘20s” theme by dressing in full flapper mode, complete with feathery headgear, flashy sequins, and sassy fringe. A looping slideshow highlighted some of the people, politics, and fads of the era. The grand finale of this fun-filled event was a comedy skit titled “The Boring Twenties,” performed by TWOQC members Margot Elsner and Dodie Prescott and Performing Arts Guild members Ray Hebert and Elsa Harmon.
On Wednesday, Nov. 3, 11 ladies set out to visit the Sonoran Glass School in Tucson for a glass blowing demonstration, but soon found themselves taking advantage of two other unexpected opportunities as well. “Wow!” and “Awesome!” were just a few of the adjectives used to describe what they saw during the outing’s “triple header” experience. The group began the day witnessing the creation of an amazing glass lamp, with commentary provided by two talented artists. Their next stop was the Philabaum Glass Gallery, located in the developing Five Points Arts District, where they were dazzled by an array of world-class glassworks. Finally, participants made the short walk to the Carly Quinn tile design shop, where pieces were in various stages of stenciling and painting by staff. Lunch at American Eat Company on 4th Avenue in the barrio was a delicious conclusion to a perfect day.
After reading the memoir A Beautiful Cruel Country by Eva Wilbur-Cruz in the spring, the 3rd Friday Book Group was eager to see the actual site of the former Wilbur ranch in Arivaca where the author was born and raised. When Quail Creek amateur historian Tony Kaprowski offered to take them there on Wednesday, Nov. 10, the ladies jumped at the chance. Tony was able to provide the group with many interesting tidbits of historical information about the area that greatly added to the enjoyment of the day. Lunch at the Longhorn Restaurant afterward afforded everyone the chance to share their favorite parts of the excursion.
Other events enjoyed by TWOQC members in October and November included a visit to the garden of Quail Creek resident Arlene Zaloznik, a meeting of the Genealogy Group, a Pumpkin Lovers’ Brunch hosted by Frannie Vanselow, a rock-painting class taught by Janet Rumford, and a “Classics Revisited” book discussion.
