On the evening of Nov. 10, Marines from Quail Creek Semper Fi Club, along with friends of the Corps, celebrated the 246th Anniversary of the United States Marine Corps. The honored guest was Lieutenant General John F. Goodman, USMC (Retired), accompanied by Mrs. Gayle Goodman. Colonel Steve Sanford, USMC (Retired), President of the Quail Creek Semper Fi Club, introduced the guest of honor.
The evening’s festivities were heaped in the proud traditions of the Corps. From the presentation of the colors by the Sahuarita JROTC Cadets, to a rousing toast to our Corps and the singing of the “Marine’s Hymn,” the evening followed these proud traditions. The most distinctive part of the ceremony included the reading of the commandant’s birthday message, as well as the cutting of the traditional birthday cake.
The cake is cut using a sword, as a reminder that we are a band of warriors, committed to carrying the sword, so our nation may live in peace. Traditionally, the honored guest cuts the cake and is presented the first piece. The second piece of cake is presented to the oldest Marine present, symbolizing the honor and respect accorded to experience and seniority. The oldest Marine then presents the third piece of cake to the youngest Marine present, signifying the passing of all our history and traditions to the next generation of Marines.
As Marines, regardless of status (active duty, retired, or veterans), we are proud of the heritage and sacred traditions of the Corps. As long as one Marine is standing, the celebration of the Marine Corps Birthday will be celebrated.
