A long-standing golf competition between members of the QCMGA and members of the Desert Hills Men’s Club has been on hold for the past two years because of COVID-19. In its place, a few members of the QCMGA decided to organize a similar event involving only QCMGA members and played entirely at Quail Creek. The Quail Creek Shootout was the brainchild of Kevin Collins and was held over two days, April 5 and 7, and involved 48 players. Two teams of 24 players, the Black Hat team and the Grey Hat team, competed against each other in a 9-hole two-man team best ball match, a two-man team modified Chapman match, and 24 individual 18-hole matches. Teams were drafted by captains Paul Schupmann and Doug Stacken of the Black Hat team and Clark Wilson and Rick Bobillot of the Gray Hat team. The captains then met to determine the team and individual matchups to be used during the competition.
Final results found the Black Hat team winning by a score of 27.5 to 20.5. The consensus of all the participants was that it was a resounding success and should be repeated in the future. The competition was intense but friendly. Perhaps the most important result of the event was the camaraderie established between 48 members of the QCMGA, most of whom had never met each other or played together before. It was a true bonding experience.
