The Green Valley Chapter, Military Officers Association will be hosting its annual JROTC Scholarship awards dinner on Tuesday, April 28, in the Madera Clubhouse ballroom. The social period begins at 5 p.m., with dinner being served at 5:30 p.m. The menu will feature a choice of chicken cordon bleu or a flatiron steak, served with seasonal vegetables. Both entrees will feature red velvet cake for dessert. The cost for the meal is $29.50, with checks made payable to GV MOAA. Wine can be purchased at $17.50 per bottle or $6.50 by the glass, and beer will be available for purchase. Cash or Quail Creek credit cards only.
Six students representing Nogales, Rio Rico, Walden Grove, and Sahuarita High Schools will be competing for three scholarships. All students must be recommended by the senior JROTC instructor at their respective schools. The cadets, along with their parents, will be the Chapter’s guests at the dinner.
The cadets all submitted their applications in a timely manner, so they were in the hands of the MOAA Scholarship review committee before the schools were shut down. Members of the committee reviewed the applications in the privacy of their own homes, and then held teleconferences to choose the winners when there was a tie vote on a particular applicant. Although the scholarship is issued in the name of the student, he or she doesn’t get the money directly. Rather, the actual payment is sent to the school, to be deposited into the student’s account.
Reservations for the dinner may be made by calling Quail Creek resident Phil Lamb at 520-771-6098 or 503-730-3664, no later than April 19. The event is open to all military officers, active duty, retired, former, National Guard, and Reserve.
Should the ballroom still be closed on April 28 because of COVID-19, the scholarship winners will be notified of their selection by the end of April, and the ceremony will be rescheduled for a later date.
