The Women of Quail Creek (TWOQC) are gearing up for their fifth annual scholarship awards ceremony on Monday, April 27 at 6:30 p.m., in the Madera Clubhouse ballroom. The entire Quail Creek community is invited to join them in the celebration, because it was through your generosity in supporting the Scholarship Committee’s fundraising efforts that they will be able to present the scholarship certificates to deserving young ladies. The actual payment is sent directly to the school to be deposited into the student’s account.
Seniors from both Walden Grove and Sahuarita High Schools, who will be attending Pima Community College or pursuing studies to obtain a certification degree in a discipline that does not require a college degree—like construction or culinary arts or as a dental or veterinary technician, will be among the winners.
Members of the committee have been busy reviewing the applications for and interviewing both groups, relying heavily on technology due to the social distancing requirement. The Women in Transition (WIT) scholarships, valued at $2,500 each, go to women over 21 years old, who want to either begin post-high school studies or complete classes that were placed on hold while they were raising families.
There will be one very special scholarship this year, a memorial scholarship in memory of longtime Quail Creek resident Quigley Robichaud. When Quigley died in spring 2019, at age 96, her neighbors on Longspur Place, along with members of the many Tai Chi classes that Quigley enjoyed so much, decided to establish a scholarship in her honor. Like the ladies who are competing for one of the WIT scholarships, Quigley returned to school at a later age in the 1950s to earn her college degree.
Should the ballroom still be closed on April 27 because of COVID-19, the scholarships will still be awarded, with the celebration being rescheduled for a later date.
