Crazy Eight

Some of the cars participating in the April 14 showWayne Potter and Dianne Sevick

The eighth annual Quail Creek Car and Motorcycle Show was held on Sunday, April 14 and it was indeed crazy! Crazy as in the record number of cars that participated and crazy as in the record cash and food donations that were received!

This year’s show was dedicated to the memory of Tony Sostarich who passed away in early April. Tony and wife Lois were long time Santa Cruz Valley car nuts and great friends and supporters of our annual car show.

We had a little extra publicity this year thanks to Dan Shearer, Editor of the Green Valley News. Dan published a story about Duane Miller’s and Wayne Potter’s cars on the front page of the Sunday, April 7 edition which also included information about the show. This extra publicity and the promotional efforts of Wayne Potter and Kate Smith, Activities Coordinator at Quail Creek, resulted in a record number of participants. We had a total of 64 cars and four motorcycles compared to last year’s 42 cars and two motorcycles.

Disc Jockey Warren B of Tucson once again entertained us. He did an excellent job playing music and keeping the crowd informed with food bank information and raffle updates. His enthusiasm for the music is contagious.

Of course, the reason we all gather is to benefit the Green Valley-Sahuarita Community Food Bank. In addition to entry fees and cash donations, we held two 50/50 raffles. This year both of the winners, Santa Cruz Valley Car Nuts’ Morris Pillers and Jerry Copp, donated their winnings back to the food bank! We were able to donate a whopping total of $1447.00 in cash! This was a huge increase over last year’s donation of $902.00! We also collected 344 pounds of food which was also an increase over last year. According to Food Bank Director Mary Jane Goodrich, all totaled our donation this year will provide 6625 meals!

Thank you to Quail Creek for providing the beautiful location and to Kate Smith for her coordinating efforts. We also thank the Quail Creek Patrol staff and the folks from Food & Beverage. Again, Don and Nonie Schutze were invaluable to us as coworkers! We needed all the hands we could get to hold things down in the winds that were experienced that day!

A special thanks goes out to all of you who entered, donated food or money and to all who joined us as spectators. Hope to see you all next year for Number Nine!
