Traveling with technology – taking your gadgets on the road

Paul Jaffe shares travel tips

On March 18 the Computer Club monthly program was presented by Paul Jaffe, a Quail Creek resident and world traveler. Paul and his wife Georgia have traveled to many overseas locations and have cruised numerous times. Paul’s travel experience and his interest in technology make him a great resource for sharing with other Quail Creek residents on what they might need when traveling abroad.

Paul’s presentation outlined a variety of items such as electrical considerations. Foreign countries have different voltage and different connectors, so planning what you might want to bring along is important. While the internet is almost everywhere, it’s generally not free on cruise ships. Paul advised to work offline and minimize connect time. Paul also covered phone data plans for traveling abroad and how to avoid unpleasant phone bill surprises. Another topic was using the latest technology to stay in touch at home, including video chat, instant messaging, portable Mi-Fi Hot Spot and much more.

Paul mentioned a few phone/tablet apps that are good for traveling including Flightboard, FlightTrack, NextFlight and SeatGuru. For a thorough discussion and demonstration of travel apps, be sure to attend the next Computer Club program on April 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the ballroom.
