Quail Creek is fortunate to have so many residents willing to give their time, talents and energies to our community. The POA Board members are grateful to all volunteers but, in particular, the Board appreciates the contributions of our committee volunteers. We will be running a series of pieces in this publication to recognize committee members (and others!) who make a significant difference by their volunteer efforts. This month we are happy to give recognition and thanks to our Finance Committee.

The 2014 Finance Committee is led by Chair Steve Signore aided by Vice-Chair Kathie Kidwell with Sue Baird serving as Secretary. Other members are Rick Woods, Paula Scafuri, Jeane Hostetler, Denny Huber, Leone Roberts and J.B. Ranney. Each month committee members review the POA’s performance to budget, that is, how well do our actual revenues and expenditures track to our budgeted numbers? Are the variances within acceptable tolerance or do they indicate an issue or trend that we need to address? General Manager Mike Taylor and his Directors prepare the monthly variance reports with data supplied by Robson Corporate offices. At the Finance Committee’s monthly meetings, committee members discuss the variance reports and typically pose related questions or make recommendations.

How do they manage this? Each committee member is assigned a cost center area as his/her primary responsibility. For example, Paula Scafuri and J.B. Ranney are assigned to Golf Operations. While they are interested in all facets of our financial performance as a POA, they are focused on Golf Operations to include the Pro Shop, the Range, golf cart rentals and Golf Maintenance. They work with Joel Jarress (Head Golf Professional) and J.R. Kies (Course Superintendent) to understand line-item expenses/revenues, variances and capital equipment/projects needs as well. Rick Woods and Jeane Hostetler perform this function for our Sports Activities/Facilities (Anza Athletic Club, Tennis/Pickleball, Pools, Wellness) and Patrol. Steve Signore, Kathie Kidwell and Sue Baird monitor our Food & Beverage Operations (Grill, Banquets) and Recreation. Arts & Tech, the clubhouse, G&A, Roads, Common Areas and Capital belong to Leone Roberts and Denny Huber.

In June of each year the next year’s budget process begins, culminating in a budget briefing to the community and action by the POA Board to approve the budget at the POA Board annual meeting (this year on November 20 at 6:00 p.m. in the Crystal Ballroom). Between June and November committee members review historical data, draft their own projections, then meet with staff and the General Manager to reconcile differences and make recommendations. Several iterations of the budget emerge as committee members, staff and the General Manager refine projections. The POA Budget includes not only operations and maintenance line-items, but also capital equipment/projects.

Once the budget is approved by the POA Board, it (and the community briefing) becomes available for viewing on the HOA website under Finance Committee for viewing at your leisure.

Many thanks go to the dedicated members of the Finance Committee. Please thank them when you see them!
