Photography Club posts September “Lines” winners

Robert Thoresen

A rather large number of entries for the month resulted in an overtaxed jury.

Lines was the theme for September and was effectively utilized by this month’s winners. John Strandquist returned to the first place winner’s platform with his entry of the inside of the U S Air Force Academy Chapel taken during a cross country trip last summer with this stop in Colorado Springs. The chapel has worship areas for all religions. John’s photo is of the protestant chapel ceiling. Even with a bright hazy sunny day, the interior appeared rather dim necessitating a higher ISO (640) in order to avoid camera movement. A little photoshopping was used to reduce a strong blue hue within the chapel and to warm up the scene and add a more varied spectrum. Nikon D300 with AF-S DX VR Zoom – Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.8 lens. f/4.5, 1/80 sec, ISO 640. Manual white balance, 27 mm focal length (40 mm equivalent).

A close up picture of a barrel cactus in his front yard got Doug Mutter a second place in this month’s contest. The cactus was purchased and planted for its color and texture which enhanced the front yard’s landscape design. When Doug learned that the photo contest for the month was lines, he immediately thought of this handsome and symmetrical Arizona resident.

Sony DSC-H7 camera. f/5.6, 1/800 sec, ISO 100. 31.8 mm focal length. Doug used the flash.

Like Doug Mutter, Marcus Hines is a new member of the Photography Club and took third place with an image taken at the Fall Kite Festival last October at Lincoln City, Oregon. Only the brave kite flyers decided to participate this particular day as the sky was overcast with periodic rain and stiff wind, a typical day on coastal Oregon. This formation of 12 patriotic kites required a lot of muscle to control. Marcus used his Nikon camera which features a 35mm film frame size sensor for greater light gathering area offering high contrast sensitivity and lower refraction. Nikon D4 with AF Zoom – Nikkor 70-300 mm f/4 – 5.6 G Lens. f/29, 1/3200 sec, ISO 12800. 100 mm focal length (100 mm focal length 35 mm equivalent.

The PCQC provides monthly photo contests for its members. Different themes are chosen by the club’s board for the entire year. For the remaining three months of the year, October’s theme was Cowboy Culture, November’s will be Close-Macro, and December’s theme will be Food. There is one open contest during the year. Residents are always welcome to attend the club’s monthly meetings. Club activities can be found at http://www.pcqc.org.
