Photography Club posts October ‘Cowboy Culture’ winners

Robert Thoresen

Cowboy Culture was the October month’s contest theme and two of the winners returned to place again after posting places in August and another in September. Club treasurer Cathy Leary placed for the first time.

Doug Mutter’s End of the Trail cow skull and horse shoe comes from part of his front yard. Doug found the skull 33 years ago in the Colorado Mountains and has been carting it around since, including Alaska and back. The thrown horse shoe adds the feeling of an era passed by, an Arizona cow puncher. Doug won second place in September with another photo from his front yard. Doug doesn’t travel far to get prized photographs. Sony DSC-H7 camera, f/4, 1/125 sec, ISO 100, 14.6 mm focal length.

Pete Murphy took another second place with a picture taken during a club photo shoot to Old Tucson last April. The cowgirl is getting ready to take the harness off the draft horse after a long afternoon pulling the stage around town. After her work is done Pete was told she was heading off to the saloon to down a cool one. Nikon Coolpix P500. f/5.4, 1/320 sec, ISO 160. 31.2 mm focal length (176 mm equivalent in a 35 mm camera.

The display of boots is from the Paul Bond Boot factory in Nogales. The specific model called the Bucking Bronco in the back row right caught Cathy Leary’s eye and for the entry was rewarded third place. The Photography Club made the trip to the factory a year ago. The factory has literally thousands of patterns to choose from and the custom made boots range in price from $800 to $2000 depending on material and complexity of design. The bronco design is so quintessentially Arizona. Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi. f/4, 1/60 sec ISO 400. 28 mm focal length (46.2 mm 35 mm equivalent).

The Photography Club of Quail Creek has a monthly photo contest for its members and schedules photo field trips throughout the year. The club meets the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. in the Gold Room of the Madera Clubhouse. Field trips occasionally replace scheduled meetings. Guests are welcome to attend meetings.
