Historic Canoa Ranch will be highlighted at MOAA fall luncheon

After a summer break, the Green Valley chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) will open its fall lineup of activities with a luncheon on Wednesday, Sept. 18, in the Madera Clubhouse ballroom 3.

Simon Herbert, historical preservation specialist for Historic Canoa Ranch will be the guest speaker. Located at the western base of Elephant Head Mountain, just south of Green Valley, the area was known as a life-sustaining source of water in the dry Sonoran Desert.

The historic ranch is part of the Raúl M. Grijalva Canoa Ranch Conservation Park that comprises 4,800 acres of the original San Ignacio de la Canoa land grant. Hacienda de la Canoa was the name given in the 1920s by Levi Manning to the 30-acre ranch headquarters. People from all time periods have contributed to the special history of this place. Besides its historic attributes, the ranch is a great place for bird watching and hiking.

Though close to Quail Creek, many have never visited this treasure, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and this presentation will tell them what they have been missing.

This event is open to all military officers, active duty, reserve, National Guard, retired and former military and their spouses. To make reservations for the luncheon, contact Peggy McGee at 520-207-6188 or [email protected].
